Sunflowers have always felt like the most generous of flowers — the way they turn toward the light, the way they fill a garden with warmth without asking anything in return. I painted these on a summer afternoon, when the sky was that particular shade of blue that only lasts a few weeks a year.

A small orange butterfly landed while I was working. I kept it in.

The palette knife builds the petals in thick, directional strokes — golden yellow over warm ochre, white clouds pushed into a soft blue sky. Up close the surface is textured and physical, almost sculptural. From across the room it simply glows.

It is an original oil on hardboard panel, painted in heavy impasto style. The kind of painting that changes slightly with the light — brighter in the morning, warmer in the evening.
